The Grimoire of Exalted Deeds magazine was first printed in 1993, or would it be better to use the term “photocopied?” That’s right. The first five issues were photocopied fanzines that were made using Microsoft Publisher.
On April 1, 1996, The Grimoire of Exalted Deeds magazine was published on a web press (newsprint) with a glossy cover, and it was officially registered as a business. That print run was 13,000, free where available, and $3 through the mail, worldwide.
Issue #12 became the official Program for the Milwaukee Metalfest, and the ACTUAL print run was 40,000. The magazine was essentially the same, but the centerfold listed the bands that played, and most of the interviews in that issue were bands in the festival.
Issue #23 was the first fully-glossy issue with a third of the pages in full color. It was officially distributed in Tower Records, but other chains refused to carry the magazine due to Satanic imagery. (The nudity was fine, but the inverted crosses were a no-no). However, privately-owned, non-corporate shops were proud to carry the magazine. This was desirable because malls and book stores were not the most likely places for readers to search for extreme metal coverage.
Blah blah blah. After some cataclysmic events, the mag existed only on the web. Issue #33 was printed as a test, in tabloid form, and was distributed free as in the old days. Bill Zebub’s movies began to take off and his time was spent fulfilling merciless deadlines.
The web version of the mag will come to strong and active life, and a printed version will be made every once in a while. There is talk of anthologies being printed as on-demand books, but first this site, or sites, must be invigorated
